Intel CPU Prices never seem to change

It’s been nearly 9 months since I put together my latest desktop system and that led me to check the prices for new CPUs. There’s this thought in the back of my mind that I can bump up my current 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 to a 3Ghz model sometime in the future for cheap.

However, to my surprise, Intel CPU prices haven’t changed much at all in the last 9 months. I originally paid around $190 for my current 533Mhz FSB Pentium 4 2.4B. That same $190 can only buy a 2.6B. Uh…that’s only a 200Mhz difference. What the heck!? To go up to 3Ghz will cost me $328. That’s insane.

I guess the reality of it all is that the market has found it’s sweetspot. Even though Intel and AMD have raced to 3+ Ghz processors, the market isn’t snapping them up as readily and thus the prices are staying high.

At any rate, it looks like I’m not upgrading my CPU anytime soon since it’s not cost effective. Of course, it’s not like I’m seriously wanting extra speed but the allure of 3Ghz is tempting…
