i just checked sonystyle.com and it ships the next day.
as was posted several times, most of us agree that this won’t be the “ipod killer” that it’s touted to be. this model carries 20gb, but i read somewhere that a 40gb network walkman is currently in the works.
I just read a WSJ article that points out a ton of flaws in this product. I love Sony’s gear, but this seems a bit unpolished to drop $400 on at the moment.
Given the success and growing popularity of this site among mini notebook forums, I hope someone important inside Sony takes what is contained herein to heart, both praises and admonishments.
In real estate we say “price can fix any problem on a home”. However, I have to agree with you on this , tifosiv122.
Sony: Fully support MP3 or you will never compete. Stop looking for the extra revenue from proprietary formats and give the people what they want. I could almost say the same for memory sticks.
If you scroll down the page of the first link in this thread, it says that it also plays back MP3. I thought it only played back the ATRAC format? Or do they mean MP3 after it’s been converted to ATRAC (drag n drop, probably) by Sony’s software?
[quote author=“TruthSeeker”]...not to mention one other small problem…..Sony’s proprietary ATRAC3.
And that little flaw alone keeps me and a bunch of my friends from considering a Sony MP3 player. It’s true they do loose sales on the use of ATRAC3 only format. Heck even the iPod allows the playing basic MP3 files.
This is just another showing of why a media and technology company should not be the same. Sony’s technology department always comes up with these great new toys that I drool over until the media department steps in and says that the device must only allow DRMed files to be used. It’s really sad to see a company that can’t make something as cool as it could be because of internal politics.
Ohh well maybe someday they will do like they did with the Clie and allow the playing of basic MP3 files as well. Until then I’m going to stick with other portable music players.

I’ve watched this happen for years. Had a Betamax VCR, beat the pants off VHS (Beta is still used by professionals). Sony got greedy with licenseing and cheapo VHS machines killed them.
IBM did the same thing with the PC. Had something like 20-30% of the PC market and decided they needed a proprietary buss in the PS/2. Had they placed the buss in the public domain, we prob. wouldn’t be using PCI today and IBM would still be setting standards.
Phillips on the other hand I admire. Invented the audio cassette, licensed to anyone who’d manufacture to spec. and even provided the ubiquitous piano-key transport. Wiped out the 8-track in less than 10 years.
I thought Sony had learned. Co-developed the CD with, (who else) Phillips and offered it as a standard. Wiped out vinyl (sorry purists) in less than 5 years.
Instead of all this self-protective BS, the music and movie industries should look at their overpriced under-quality offerings.

Wow, thats 2 in a row, this and the paypal thread…
Erik
Oh, sorry about that. I’ll try to disagree on the next thread. We have to keep the other forum members on their toes, you know. :D
LOL.. are they ever happy Truth?
Well, tifo and Drachen see things a little different than I do. They have superior knowledge compared to me (by far), but I always have had a knack for seeing things in a different light. Its all good though. I admire what they bring to this forum. It would not be enjoyable without them.
