7. Once again, goto Device Manager. Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, you should see 4 entries named “USB Root Hub”. The 3rd one should be for the camera. Double click on it and select the Power Tab and make sure you see something like “Sony Visual Communication Camera VCC-U01” under the Attached devices label. If thats not the case then select another USB root hub and try the same. Now, click on the Power Management tab and uncheck the entry which says “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Click OK and exit device manager.

I beleive there is a hot fix for this now on sonys site?

Day 2 with new TR3 is rough. I wanted to start with a clean install but have run into problems.

Step 1 - done

Step 2 - “Put in your Windows XP Pro disk”. Problems - my TR3 didn’t come with it’s own XP Pro disk (and I assumed this was standard) Not a problem because I bought XP Pro for the home computer way back when and thought I could use that disk and the product key on the bottom of the TR. No dice - I used my original product key to get past this point but I know I will have problems once I go online to register and get updates.

Question I’m afraid to hear the answer to. If I want to perform a clean install of XP Pro, do I have to buy a new XP Pro disk/key?

Step 3 - no problem

Step 4 - When installing my “Recovery Disk” I get an error message saying - “To start the VAIO Recovery Wizard please restart your computer. The VAIO Recovery Wizard starts automatically” There is no VAIO Driver Recovery Wizard that I can find on the disk. If I restart the computer the Recovery wizard autoruns and there is never an option to select or run “Driver Recovery”?

Could this be a difference in my XP (old - no SP1)? Or is my startup disk different than the system used for this thread?

Sorry for the length (wanted to be clear for those who might be able to offer help)

Also to clarify - my computer is a TR3AP2 (not AP3), DVD-ROM, 1g and Windows XP Pro installed. I just wanted to start over with a clean install

The TR doesn’t come with an XP disc. The TR1 came with recovery CDs, the newer ones came with a program to generate recovery CDs. Just install the copy of XP you have. When you activate, just call MS and tell them that you bought a new computer and are transferring the OS to the new laptop - meaning that you have junked the old computer. Note that this only works for the retail version. If it’s OEM (came with the computer) its license is technically only for the actual hardware you bought it with.

Answered my own question eventually - for anyone else with TR3AP2. Step 4 should have you putting in Disk labelled 1 of 9. This is where the “"VAIO Driver Recovery Wizard” is located.

Clean install done - thanks for the help Rahul

DVD ‘s won’t play. Don’t know if I missed something in the clean install but I can’t get DVD movies to play. Windows media player opens and I get the error message “Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer”

I did use the recovery wizard to install MPEG decoder - but it didn’t help

u need a software like windvd installed. Probably the presence of another dvd player will also do, but without it media player cannot play dvd’s.

I believe you can install it if you install the Shared Library component from here .

Not sure which Shared Library Component you mean. The only DVD related component I see is for UJ-812 DVD RW. Unfortunately I only have the DVD-ROM/CD-RW

I guess he means to say this one:

11/14/2003 SO-P30800803IJ03US.EXE Sony Shared Library Sony® Shared Library

Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP

One more thing...the link Drachen has given is for the TR3AP3 so might just want to find one for ur model as well i.e. if u dont have a TR3AP3. Actually it might work fine on any model since I have been sharing these libraries with owners of other models too!

I just followed all the instructions and ran into a few problems (already mentioned here)…

a. Camera does not work. Installed everything as directed. The camera start screen comes up, but then just hangs and remains onscreen. When I ctrl+alt+del, it doesnt even show the app as running.

b) DVD does not work. The app starts up ok, but when I insert a DVD, it just hangs.

c) Tried installing photoshop and after double clicking the setup, it just disappears. When I try to shut down my computer, it says an app is still running.

So far after the clean install, I could only shut down by forcing it to shut off. GRRRR…
