Hello dear all x505 beholders,

I think this notebook is so perfectly designed, it should be kept alive and updated into the future. WHat do i mean? Well, To me the size of the machine, it`s weight and slimness gives it ultimate portability without the sacrifice of comfort for typing and viewing media.  The screen size in terms of physical actual measures of width and length are again perfect and that is exactly where my first point comes in. As new OLED technology and lcd technology is on the rise one cold potentially replace the existing screen with one that provides better overall specs maybe even touch screen capabilities.
Also the issues with upgrading the memory and the processor only really appear in the context of keeping the old motherboard, but who says eventually we could not basically replace the entire mtherboard with a new one of equivalent dimensions to fit and much higher specs. Anyway to put it shortly, to me the form factor of our x505 is so good that i would not wish anything smaller in size to replace it, only with better specs. To me any non-solid state memory devices will quickly desert to the thing of past and hence i do not see any problems with not having able to install blue ray drives into the body of a notebook as i think they will soon become obsolete. To me also no matter how advenced touchscreen technologies will become i will still probably prefer to use a “real” keyboard instead.

I am eagerly awaiting what you guys think about the potential of making our beloved machines “immortal” smile

The above ideas are in many ways naive and are merely a vision in my brain, please feel free to correct me on any assumptions that i have made that are incorrect.

Mark

Nice ideas Marcus!
Replacing motherboard would be a task, as it was a custom made for X505; Macbook Air was another notebook that boasted a custom made motherboard but it I am not familiar with its technicalities and size. X505 MB is of a size of a MiniDisk.
LCD replacement would be another difficult task, I wish it was a simple swap…
I definitely wanna install SSD soon, as I am getting tired of slow boots.
Let’s see what other ideas other forum members have. I’d love to keep my X505 for another 2-3 years going strong.

Upgrading to the SSD will make you feel like its a new computer.  The reformatted drive may have a placebo effect on speed though.

I upgraded to a SSD and ghosted my installation, so no placebo effect there :+). It really is a great upgrade, as the original disk is pretty slow, and the 512mb of RAM cause it to swap somewhat. The difference is really big.

And you can always lower the CAS-latency of the memory to 2.0 instead of 2.5, that helps when playing games.

As it is now, I have no need for an upgrade, other then HD-video not working. But it will be a while until there’s a really small (or even normally small) mobo + proc + mem that will be up to that task.

edit: i made a video so you can see how fast it comes out of hibernation, and opens a document: http://julez.vox.com/library/video/6a00d41413e77d685e00fa96a351e00002.html
