I think in that thread, someone stated it ‘should’ work in the S, but not sure anyone has officially confirmed that or not yet…I spoke w/ vaiofreak about it one day and he indicated a friend of his had done the 2.0 upgrade, but I think it was on a T/TR, not on an S…so again, don’t think it’s officially been tried on an S yet.
I really want to try it, but I only need a few profiles that even 1.1 supports…HID for a mouse, Serial for a GPS and my smartphone…no need for any of the other 2.0 capability…but all the PCMCIA solutions in BT 1.1 eat 5v of power…the internal bluetooth 1.1 and 1.2 stuff is way less voltage and overall a cleaner solution…I just don’t want to hassle w/ the upgrade itself.
If I could find a cardbus (3v) pcmcia bluetooth card, that’d be my preference, but none exist.
The only compelling thought in my mind w/ the 2.0 is to get the EDR speed and power consumption down…but not sure that it’d make that much of a difference.
If you try it, please post back and let us know how it goes. I’ll do the same, if I decide to go that route.

IF it worked with a T/TR then it should work in an S right? I remember someone saying that a log time ago about the hardware in the two systems….
I’d like to go ahead and upgrade if there is someone that has done it on an S model and was successful. $90+ is quite a lot of money for an experiment. Whatever I have right now, I think its a BT v1.0 is crap. Lets me do most things I need but no headset compatability. With 2.0, Stereo headphones are compatable right? That would be sweet
One more thing, since both of you(gilberto, Groovy) have done the upgrade.
Since I already have bluetooth on my S right now, do I have to buy a complete new wires and antenna with new module or can I keep those and just get the new BT module alone?
Yea. I’m on a student budget, so the actual price with tax and shipping is $105 which is pretty steep. But I always seem to either cut corners or starve myself and buy stuff.
I wonder if someone would be interested in buying my old BT module…
Do you have to use the other software, if I don’t want anymore profiles other than what you get w/ Microsoft’s stack, will that work w/ the 2.0 module ?
If you don’t use the other software, do you still get the lower power consumption of the 2.0 module ?
Just curious before I jump on this…I can pick up a 1.1 pcmcia bluetooth (5v) for around $40…only prob is the battery sucking action on a 5v pcmcia card.
Out of curiosity, does it matter how much power is consumed by a Bluetooth module? Since it is already a small unit, how much impact would it have on your battery?
dunno specifically, for each version of BT (1.0, 1.1, 1.2, and now 2.0), how much it’d tax the battery…but the PCMCIA bluetooth adapters are pulling full PCMCIA 5v, regardless of what BT 1.1 (which is what these PCMCIA cards run) uses, the card is eating more voltage than a 3v cardbus card (also PCMCIA).
I forget what a MiniPCI module is, I expect also 3v, but if you flip that puppy off, you’ll extend your battery life by quite a bit…same goes for bluetooth…you should notice somewhat of an improvement by turning off the bluetooth radio when not in use.
My gripe about the PCMCIA units are that I don’t think you can ‘turn off’ the use of power like you can w/ the internals…if the card is plugged in, it’s pulling power.
The internal cards use less power, and they can be turned off w/ software or a switch when you don’t need them on.
BUT…in addition to the additional profile support, there are two big things hyped w/ BT 2.0, lower power consumption and faster speeds…so I was just curious mostly.
I’m trying to install UGPZ6 in place of UGPZ5 in my type S vaio.
The problem I’ve run into is that the Z6’s connector is too small to connect to the board. How is this supposed to be connected? Does it go in the same location as my old Z5? or somewhere else? or do I need an adapter or something?
The attached picture shows the reason for my madness.
