Thank you once again. I have now replaced the mk6006gah with an mk8007gah on my tr5ap. This was my second round (upgraded previously from the factory mk4004gah) and was a little easier, but could not have done it without your guide. Thank you very much. I can confirm that the toshiba MK8007GAH works perfectly on the tr5ap.

OK, slight fly in the ointment. I would appear not to be able to edit the original post - there’s a size limit which cuts it halfway down, so if I try and edit it I’ll lose half of it, which would be a pity. So… I’ve made a copy of it at:

http://chrisrae.com/programming/trhd/

The original post in this thread is no longer current - the web site is. Right now the only difference is the “biggest drive currently available” part.

If I need to make any further updates to the web page version, please continue to post here.

I blame the forum move…

Chris - at the risk of getting dinged for cross posting -

You seem to be The Man when it comes to disassembling a TR3A. I have a broken DC Jack. In another thread I saw where to get the parts, but I have no idea how to actually replace the jack (other than randomly taking the computer apart).

Is the jack and where it plugs in accessible during the HD replacement process you so beautifully document? Can you give me any hints?

Ah, flattery will get you everywhere. I have to say I’m not sure - I’m not really the guru of taking anything apart, I think I’m just the only person who took photos when I did do it. All I can tell you is that you will probably have to follow quite a few of these directions to get near the jack, but from there you’re on your own.

Take some photos and you can become the master of that part. smile

hi

ive just swapped out my hitachi for a toshiba, which was straight forward enough, had a bit of issues getting the machine to boot again but that was down to the ram not being seated properly.

however, now my TR will not pick up the new harddrive. i cant expand it in BIOS to see if its there. when i try and install a copy of xp pro it gets to the point of creating a partition, but cant see a drive to do so then blue screens, and if i use the vaio recovery disk, its gets to the point where i see a cursor, then says ‘hard disk not found, check it is properly connected’ which i have obviously checked several times.

im pretty sure the drive is working as it does start generating some heat, but i cant hear it at all. other than that i can only guess it must be my new toshiba drive IDE ribbon? anyone got any ideas???? i’ve got a 2.5” drive I can try connecting up using the toshiba ribbon but i wasnt sure if that would try and use more power and fry the motherboard (although that might all ready be the case)

also if i go into advanced under bios, next to primary ide adapter it reads NONE, but next to secondary it shows CD ROM, shouldnt there be something next to primary?

I’m so glad I came across this post!  It was exactly the guide I needed to help me replace the HD on my TR5.

While I was in there, I replaced the power jack socket, tightened the hinges and slipped a new keyboard in on the way out, so now he’s as good as new.

Thanks!

Well, it looks like my harddrive might be dying, it’s making grinding noises.  Luckily for me I still check these forums every once in a while.  Now might be a good time to replace my camera too (if I can find a reasonable replacement anywhere).

Does anyone know where I can find the Hitachi drive for sale?  I can’t seem to find it at Newegg or Mwave.  Or should I just try Ebay?  I’m not sure which one to get (searched “C4K60”) that will have the right connector.

Thanks in advance.

ETA: What about replacing my Hitachi with this Toshiba?

http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/60GB-Toshiba-Mini-Hard-Disk-Drive/2662982/product.html?

And getting the list of parts from Nexttronics (thanks BladeRunner!) to convert from Hitachi to Toshiba, would that work?

Well, I did the conversion from my 40GB Hitachi to the 60GB Toshiba and really like that the intermittent “clicking” noise that has been present since day one is now gone.

With the extra space I am now dual-booting XP and Ubuntu 8.04 and I love Ubuntu…all I need to do is find a way to make my webcam work with it.  The forums at ubuntuforums.org mainly mention newer Vaios with a Ricoh webcam, and I haven’t tried those drivers with our VCC’s (afraid I’ll frak something up).

Anyone have any ideas?

I have just fitted this according to your BRILLIANT pictures and instructions to a TR5MP and it works very well. The disc arrived formatted into 2 main partition and a third 4gb backup one.I used an Acronis startup CD to adjust the partition sizes and Acronis Home 11 to restore my installation from a usb drive to which I had backed up my complete installation..
