I have just been looking at the vaio-link site, at all the avaiable drivers etc, and I notice that there is a firmware update for the UJDA745, should I do this and why?

why not, you only live once…make sure you set a restore point first (or turn on whatever other driver/system protection you use - like GoBack - and first review the section under rollback driver in the device manager applet, then see what happens.  this being firmware update however none of this may help you in event of a problem, and you may be forced to replace your dvd/cdrom.  seriously, i don’t have a clue on what i am saying, i am just the grand puba of miruba after all, but i do remember trying the download and getting a message like “you are already updated you smuck” but my memory these days is far less than what the tr1a came with.  waiting for an upgrade to 1g from icube.usa now, and one for organic processor in the future.

Does the Firmware Upgrade mention what it fixes? Unfortunately, I can’t access the site since I’m a non-European customer. In many cases, if you’re not having any issues (that are fixed by the newer firmware) then perhaps you can live without updating unnecessarily.

Also, you may not need to update your system. You should check what version of the firmware you currently have. You can do this with Nero’s InfoTool if you have it.

the firmware can be found by navigating to tr1 model from this page:   and then clicking the Drivers and Updates button.  groovee, if you are not being let in cause you are NON european, what is that anyway, then you should contact the ACLU in America and sue Sony’s a**.  oh, were was i…

yeah, click on that and you will see the update : 9/5/2003   CD-RW Firmware This utility will update the Matsushita® UJDA745 DVD/CD-RW Drive Firmware to improve the drive’s reliability when burning CD media.
MS-401010C02HL03US.EXE

clicking on that will put you in the software agreement stream of things. you find out there that it’s version 1.01.  but note the warning: This utility is only for use with Sony® VAIO® computer systems sold in the United States, Canada or Latin America.

groovey.  sue them.

if you are using DAP, turn it off. sony has some sorta security thing going on here…hidden urls, etc. and DAP can’t deal.

repeat the above steps about 10 times, cause the sony support site s**** and hardly ever works.

if that does not work, hack into the sony website using an ftp program and use this url: ftp://ftp.ita.sel.sony.com/ccpg/pc/MS-401010C02HL03US.EXE

(did they really think they could stop this riffraff from getting in?)

okay, once ya got the file, just run it.  come on, ya only live once.  but make sure you have a replacement return policy with your purchase point.  what, bought it from Sony?  Buddha help ya then.

seriously, the help popup tells you that you will be prompted if the update is not needed.  and guess what?  IT’S NOT!!!!

so what is this?  what’s it for? I bought my sony in early august, so it must be one of the oldest ones out there, and it’s already up to date.  it remains just another sony development mystery.

ps.I’ve downloaded and tried all the other updates on the update page, and they all seem to have no effect whatsoever on my tr1a, which is really good news.

yours in Miruba,
Puba

I am convinced now that the sony support site and this one are NOT software compatible. While I was writing the last post about trying to pry the firmware update out of the sony support center, I noticed a lot of strange things happening…slow typing here, long waits, etc.  Then I later confirmed that explore had HUNG.  That’s why I had to kill all explorer threads before I could finally post to TR World.  So, my suggestion to all is that you forgettabout Sony Support website, and we’ll take care of you here.  Or maybe I need to reinstall explorer, dunno.
 Pubaless but not Mirubaless

I’ve also installed all of the patches and haven’t had any issues at all. In many cases, i didn’t notice any changes.

Regarding the firmware update, I have tried it and didn’t need it as well. It’s true, it will let you know if you don’t need it so you can try installing it. i thought MrsGadget was referring to an even newer firmware…
