Well, it arrived. My screaming S270. The fastest laptop I have ever owned. Also the most expensive. 2 Ghz Proc, 1GB Ram - I bought Kensington: much cheaper - BT, 7,200 RPM Travelstar: eBay, $165, DVD+-RW, extended battery, Radeon 9700 with 64MB RAM.

Performance is so far in excess of my TR2 that I wonder why I didn’t change earlier.

Upgrades were fairly simple to perform.

Placed the order on the 9th, received the unit on the 15th.

Happiness!

Hey there vaioguy.
There’ve been a couple of postings dotted around to suggest that the S270/S260 is quieter than the S1s were. Can you verify this at all, or at least comment upon the general fan noise level? How often does it spin up etc ? Thanks.

Since I don’t have anything but my TR to compare my S to, I will have to say that the S is MUCH louder. The fan has been on pretty much permanently since I first turned it on. However, it is still much quieter than my old Dell C600. I guess it needs the extra heat dissipation due to the horsepower crammed under the hood.

Yeah they dont 7200 RPMs for the 1.8 form factor. Infact they dont even make 5400 RPM for the 1.8.

Congratulations on the purchase, it is definitely one specced out machine that probably rivals some desktops in performance. I’m very happy with my S170 and can only imagine what an extra 300MHz would do.

I sit here typing on my TR2AP…a bit frustrated at slow screen renderings, maxed out CPU, slow opening and closing of common programs, etc.

“SO” far in excess of the TR2 means what in day to day usage Vaioguy?

I am so close to pulling the trigger for a maxed out S270…..........

Robster1958,

To answer the question:
1. I am actually calm and focused when i am working on my laptop. Before, I was frustrated by ridiculous load and response times for outlook, adobe, excel, visio and access. Now, it is smooth and responsive. No frustration, just concentration.
2. I can type about 30% faster because my fingers are better suited to a somewhat larger keyboard.
3. I am not worried about adding a utility or two to my system for fear of reducing performance even further
4. I can see the damn screen without straining my eyes. I didn’t think this would make such a difference, but man, what a change to my daily fatigue.
5. Stability is significantly improved.

Lolz i have never had a problem typing on my TR. Though im used to a bigger, much bigger keyboard. But still the TR keyboard has been very kind to me. I have never ever been concerned about adding programs to my TR, infact my HD is about 75 % full without the loss of any performance. I mean ofcourse the S would be fast, but then your forgetting S and TR serve very different customers. TR is so much more classy than an S, everyone could use an S but i think only a few would find a use for a TR which probably makes using it even more worthwhile.

thanks Vaioguy…not only can you type fast, you your reply was very illuminating.

when i come right down to it, i need a more stable laptop with more headroom.  you are exactly right:  i “baby” my TR, afraid that I will crash it.  it happens fairly often..total freeze..cannot open task manager even.

even when playing an mp3…as soon as i launch another program…the music goes bad.  and when ripping a CD…forget it.

the other small form factor i have really liked for performance is the Apple PowerBook 12” , however the screen sucks compared to xBrite high resolution, wide aspect ratio.

the tradeoff for me is palatable as far as modest increase in size and weight of the S270.  i am actually in the minority and will miss the built-in cam of my TR though.
