Hello everyone. I have been coming to these forums for some time now, and all the information has been great. I finally decided to register and ask a few questions.

I am very interested in purchasing either a TR or a Type S. I do have a few general questions about both, but at the same time not about either. Note this will be my first notebook purchase, and I’m coming from an AMD 450  . This new notebook will likely act as a replacement for my desktop. Anyhow my questions are these.

How do centrinos stack up next to a standard pentium 4 in terms of performance? I mean does a 1.7 centrino for example have the same processing power as a p4 running at the same specs?

Is the software that is preinstalled a real pain in the ass to get rid of, if you dont want it anylonger?

Lastly what places have people found to purchase a S170 for a good price? The model I am currently looking at goes for about $2300 from sonystyle.com.

I am currently drawing a blank to any further questions, but I will likely be asking more in time. Thanks for any help with these questions you can provide.

The S will definitely serve as better desktop replacement than the TR. However, if you’re looking for a laptop purely as a desktop replacement (i.e u never plan on taking it around with you) then u could even consider those 10 pounders from HP and Toshiba.

A 1.7 ghz centrino could be compared to a P4 2.4 ghz so a 1.7 ghz centrino should definitely give u better performance than a P4 1.7 ghz.

Yeah I understand about all that with regards to gaming, but as you can guess I’m not doing too much gaming on my comp now as it is. Thats why I bought an xbox. smile I just want something that is mobile and has more horsepower than I already have, which shouldn’t be too difficult to find. I do a bit more than word processing, but nothing too terribly intense.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The TR might be good for you then. However, some people on this forum have started switching over to the S series. Seems like I’ll be the only one left with a TR

i’ve been able to remove most sony pre-install softwares without any issues. some would prefer to perform a fresh os install instead..
you won’t be the only one rahul..i’ll be with my tr for a while as well..

welcome to the forum darek!

I would recommend doing a clean install. You might find a few tutorials on this forum for the TR series.

I do quite a bit of gaming on my TR.  I would suggest looking at the forum on Gaming on the TR it answers a lot of questions about what the TR can handle…

LOL

Erik is an S-hater! Don’t be a hater! LOL

You should focus your hating energy on all the other companies that put out bad, poorly designed, heavy, ugly notebooks.

  yeah, i’m just playing. you probably have the same practical reasons for not needing/wanting/prefering the Type S as I do for the X505 and I totally respect that. Diff’rent strokes for diff’rent folks!  LOL

Bluetooth is addictive and can be hazardous to your budget.
