So far I’ve only tried one game. Final Fantasy XI Online and it runs very well even at the full 1280x800 resolution. I plan on trying out a few more in the next couple of weeks and I’ll report back.

Hey Gr00vy, how is the game?  I was thinking about getting it even though I am more of the first person shooter/stealth type (Halo, Splinter Cell) just because my sister is addicted to the Final Fantasies for PS1 and PS2.  If anything I’d be getting it a lot for her, but would still obviously be able to play it as it is my laptop.  rolleyes

But what exactly do you do in it? I know it is a RPG.  But does it follow the PS1 or PS2 stories at all? I only know FF VII

Yeah, i had the freezing issue as well but the Omega drivers solved them and have given better overall performance.

I haven’t applied the tweaks yet since the game has been decent at 1280x800 settings. I used a FOV setting of around 120 and it looks pretty good to me.

I’ll probably wait on the shader stuff since the verdict is out on how much it actually helps. Also, it’s not like it’s unplayable right now so I’m not too concerned.

The game is pretty fun once you get past level 10 or so. That’s when you stop soloing and are basically forced to party. It gets interesting there. You’ll also need to spend time figuring out when you should level and when you should work to earn money.

The graphics are pretty amazing for an MMORPG and the different characters and “emotions” are pretty funny.

Kool Have you ever played dot.Hack?  Just wondering if the “teaming” is similar to that.

It’s the “work to earn money” part I’m never fond of in MMORPGs. I do enough tedious, boring things IRL. I don’t need to do them in a game - paying real money to do them. I’m constantly making fun of my brother when he’s out fishing for rusty millinary that he can fix and resell to unsuspecting NPCs. Fishing. For rusty hats. LOL

Yeah, that’s the one thing i’m struggling with. The actually leveling part is fun but the tediousness of actually working is boring. I think they need to add more “quests” where you can make a lot of money so at least you feel like you’re doing something useful. Some of the stuff in the game is so insanely expensive that it’s almost unfathomable how one can possibly get the item.

I guess I don’t have as much time as many of the people i’m playing with so it does seem daunting at times.

i ran DOOM3 on my Sony S, it ran on low settings without any major problems.  Pretty smooth overall.  I used the new omega drivers.

erm, am i doing something wrong then?

Purely for research purposes i installed Doom 3, loaded the Omega Drivers and it runs really choppyduring gameplay, unplayably so. teh initial cutscene was ok, but as soon as the ship takes off again and you start moving around it turns into a jerk-a-thon.

It was just as bad with the original ATI driver - what could be up I wonder? i’m presuming that you are all using the default settings (640x480 and low detail) and not tweaking any of the advanced options etc?

Just done a 3D Mark 2001 test - 6337, again at default settings. Isn’t that somewhat LOW?

Also glad to know that Morrowind works flawlessly..

hmm - played around with the performance balancer thingy and its up to speed now. Funny, I don’t recall seting the system up to run slowly or anything.

3D Mark 2001 was now 10517.

Doom runs much better at 800x600 smile

phew.

Benchmarks anyone?

Just managed 12185 on 3Dmark 2001 and 3005 on 3Dmark 2003.
Pushed the clock speed up to 450 and the mem speed up to 260. Lordy knows how well the chip will perform under real gaming conditions at that rate however.

The MR9700 is designed to run at those speeds, however Sony seems to have been very conservative with the default speeds.

Will keep you informed. Anyone else tried?

Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow works very well also…

Hi, thanks for opening up the forum for the S type, finally got mine last Wednesday and thrilled with it. Amazed how many games support widescreen - so far UT2004 and GTA:VC work perfectly on widescreen which i find preferable to standard resolutions on the desktop. Counterstrike works well although keys take a little getting used to and C&C:Generals works really well.

Does it really support widescreen? Or are the people just ‘fattened’, so to speak?  The TR ‘supports’ widescreen, but it just fattens everybody.
Okay, I guess.

Depends on the game - some are “fattened”, whilst others remain their super sleek and svelte selves whilst having loads more of the scenery visible about them…

I can’t wait for HL2 to be released this month…On the way counter-strike source is playing…I think it will play better than doom…

1. They made HL2 to play on ATI cards.

2. HL2 doens’t take as much video card power and cpu usage unilke doom 3…
