Early in the new year I’ll be testing the title system against a stock TR5mp (actually the same vaio to hopefully keep the results more meaningful)

by stock I mean TR5mp - 40gb Toshiba standard hdd - 1gb of ram

I will be ghosting the vista basic o/s to both hdd’s again to try to eliminate most variables.

I’m unfamiliar with Vista so the point of this topic is to ask what can I test? what do you want checked?

let me know apps or tests you would like compared and I’ll do my best to test them against each other to see if The TR will be viable in years to come for Vista with some cost effective upgrades

Samsung 32gb SSD arrived yesterday, fitted and tested by installing regular TR restore XP. Will ghost the Vista I have and see what it’s like..

Some pictures of the 32gb ssd and simple swap out for 40gb standard Toshiba hdd. note it is virtually exactly the same in dimensions, ((images are links)

LOOKING good .... so load times about 1/2 ....

how about software loads (ex. try loading MS OUTLOOK)

Right now it takes me about 10 to 12 seconds to load OUTLOOK with Hitachi 7200RPM drive…
I have a HTS726060M9AT00 and I’m running Windows VISTA Home Premium.

1.5GB RAM ...

Let us know….

That’s a 2.5 inch hdd are you sure you have that in a TR series? I thought all the standard 1.8” are 4200, (part of the reason they are so slow)

In my limited Vista testing so far it’s looking like the ram makes little difference to booting. I can only make a loose educated guess but so far SSD alone roughly halves the boot to use time (use time to me is when continued hdd access stops).. 1.5gb is iro 2 seconds faster for some reason nd 1.0gb 5 to 8 seconds slower than 2gb… so either the system can’t use the extra ram or it is simply CPU / bus limited and beyond the additional performance gained with SSD….. everything is just waiting around for the CPU to get the job done…

The Vista home I have, (it came installed on a TR5mp) has a lot of stuff loading up, clock graphic, news links, my city temperature location, cpu % use graphic, office / Photoshop so I guess it can be skimmed down a lot to make it quicker. With 32gb SSD & 1.5gb it’s near enough 3 mins to fully booted with no continual hdd access, compared to over 6.30 with stock HDD same ram amount.

I will try more test time allowing (busy at work now after xmas)

a few more quick tests with.. TR5MP - Vista - 32gb SSD - 2gb DDR

Photoshop CS = 23
Word = 3
Excel = 2
IE7 = 1.5
Powerpoint = 2
Outlook Express (MS E-mail) = 8

I don’t have MS Outlook but do have an Office 2007 disc somewhere.. will add it if it lets me later.

Seems to work fine once booted also it is much more usable while hdd is still accessing during boot with SSD compared to normal HDD…....

Wow, great stuff. I think I’ll do the same now that someone else has bitten the bullet.

Quick Q: how do you find it’s affected your battery life?

Haven’t noticed any great difference in battery life to be honest, maybe a little better.  4y/o TR3 with WinXP SP2 + Samsung 32GB SSD, gives about 2.5hrs.
