Full brightness/full volume -> 2 hours 47 minutes. You’ll probably want to run it at full brightness anyways since it runs dimmer when on battery. So, more or less, the battery life is disappointing. I’m pretty sure the wireless abilities weren’t on either. I really think 4-5 bare minimum for a device like this. Blame Nintendo for spoiling us for all these years with the expectation of long battery life.
Wow. When I think about my first Game Boy, you know, that big original thing, I can remember playing hours and hours and hours. Games like Zelda or, much better yet, Mystic Quest come into my mind. Especially in the latter one you could literally play from dusk till dawn.
But 2 hours 47 minutes? Damn, that’s way to low. Do they expect me to play on a part time basis?

That was the reason it took them so long to release a gameboy color, the powers that be would not until they had a way to have the battery last about as long as an original GB.
Honestly, for me, the PSP even with 2.45 is still ok. I am not a kid anymore, I don’t have more then 3 hours a day to devote to a handheld game system…and on those rare occations that I do, flight for example, i’d have a way to plug it in.
Same with PDAs. Remember back when you could get several weeks out of your svelt PalmV and then went to a color PPC or Palm that was lucky to get 3 straight days out of a single charge?

Does anyone know if it takes Duo Pro or only Duo?
Erik
Well, not all flights have power outlets. Also, because it’s that short you have to constantly be mindful about charging it all the time whereas on a GBA SP or DS, you have a little more piece of mind. Of course, we need to see more tests of this with the device being used in all of its different capacities. It’s unfair to judge it just yet since none of us have our grubby little (and medium to large) hands on them.
I’m pretty certain it only takes Duo Pro. Can’t quite reference the source.
Aside from that, i’ve heard from lik-sang that 3 hours was only the time out of box, not counting charging? Sort of like the DS?
” Just after midnight, the PSP’s battery died. Just short of three hours, we’re been using it. Two hours and forty-seven minutes, it lasted. With screen brightness and volume on maximum…”
I thought that the full charge was somewhere in the high five hours range after a full juice.
EDIT:
gr00vy’s right, at 3 hours @ full power & Brightness. But apparently @ 50% brightness, battery life goes up 2x.
Just as FFD departed the train at 10:40AM, the batteries died. So there you have it—out of the box, fully charged battery, 50% screen brightness, 50% volume, six hours and three minutes.
So i guess, the real question is, which do you want? To be able to see your game, or to be able to finish the game?
C’mon guys, everyone knows the ‘real’ number that matters is how long it’s gonna last playing GT Mobile, with all the bells and whistles, head-to-head with a friend!

Then I guess none of us can say anything until early-March, eh?
Such conflicting stories. At the moment I’ll believe the guys over a Lik-Sang who actually got one on launch and tried out.

Please stop whining about the battery life now. If one more person says “Well, what if I’m on a plane trip overseas?” I’ll scream. In that case, I say this: be a little more careful with your travel agent, save a little money, and buy another battery.”
They played the golf game & Ridge Racers in WiFi head-to-heads. Looks OK to me.
Also apparently the PSP at low brightness is still brighter than a DS so its all still unclear. Should get mine in next 7 days so will have to see for myself.
Whats people’s problem with having a spare battery or two? They arn’t exactly large or expensive!!!
I must admit I like graphically realistic games. If gameplay was the only consideration we would still be using Sinclair Spectrums & C64’s not buy 4GHz PC’s with $400 graphics cards!!
I for one would sooner play PS2 quality games on my PSP for 2-3 hours than 10+ on gameboy type games with inferior screen.

How about this, since you’re probably the first of us to get a PSP (barring gr00vy or drachen flying to japan to get one in a few days) why don’t you write us a mini-review complete with pictures and opinion? I know for sure a lot of us’ll really appreciate it.

Nah, let’s continue to speculate and bash both platforms instead! Just kidding. Yeah, i can’t wait for more real world info on the product especially once the games come out (like the wireless enabled ones). I’m still pretty sure a bunch of us are going to go buy one once it comes out in the US or UK.
Your the first people on my list when it arrives but I’m only getting the Ridge Racers game initially & won’t have anyone to play WiFi head-to-heads with
Hope I don’t get one with dead pixels or UK customs impound it over Christmas! Just my luck :?
More battery info care off psp.ign.com
“So we’ve at last played our way through a full battery charge cycle. In case you don’t feel like counting, the battery died after about four hours and fourty-five minutes of five different games and one hour of MP3 play. We didn’t use the WiFi features of the system at all during this time.
Keep in mind that we avoided charging the system a number of times that we could’ve easily plugged it in (in particular, as we slept). Unless we plan on playing games for more than five hours in a row, the battery seems like it’ll be okay to us. Of course, for long trips, we may find ourselves picking up a spare just in case (they’re about $40 at retail).
We’ll continue to track our battery use as we play around with more of the system’s features over the coming days. From here on out, we’re going to start charging whenever we feel like it, as this will be a better way to get an idea of how long the PSP will last when you’re actually using it.”
Don’t forget as with our TR’s you don’t get full capacity with LithiumIon batteries until a few charge cycles.
