Celebrate the original netbook the X505

THis is just a celebratory reminder thread to commemorate the original netbook our favored X505!

Given that it came out in 2003 and now we are writing 2010 it is hard to believe that in todays fast paced technological development environment the x505 is still as competent and most in it’s class!

It is not only that but that in a body of a goddess:)

I mean there has not been a piece of silicon placed in any better home than in the x505!
THis thing is slimmer in profile that the macbook air, lighter and more elegant and was the first laptop ever to made out of premium carbon fiber and ever to be implementing a 10 layered integrated motherboard.

It was the computer that NASA took to space and used for some communication purposes.

THe list goes on and on….

Basically the new VAio X does not follow in achievement compared with the X505.

It is the mobile computer that marked a departure to a new era of computing whatever that might be, certainly in many ways a contemporary to the idea of the Ipad.

It was great for browsing the web, just like the Ipad, it was just as light (if not lighter), it has comparable processing power, it is made out of premium materials. (maybe in terms of battery life and touchscreen fun it’s not on par), otherwise a device nearly a decade the predeccessor of the Ipad still RULES!

Congrats X505 team! Long live the Vaio X505 ( you should be placed in the museum of modern art and technology)!

Cheers all the lovers of this great device If you have one, just dont sell! that is EVER:)

Any X505 with Dothan and 2MB Cache?

Hello everyone!
I’ve got myself an X505/P and /SP ones and i’m considering a CPU (motherboard, of course) and SSD upgrades. I’ve found info than /CP and /VP models have 1.1 Pentium M. Is that Dothan with 2MB cache or still Banias core?
Any /CP and /VP owners’ answers are highly appreciated!

Thanks!

X505SP Japanese Keyboard (after SSD upgrade)

I’ve just upgraded to a 16Gb SSD (one of the Samsungs - more on that in a mo), and installed an nLite’d Win XP Pro SP3. I left Japanese keyboard (+ UK and US ones) but although selected it doesn’t seem to make any difference.
Is there a keyboard driver I need specific to the X505?
The keyboard in Device Manager says “Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard”.
Any ideas please?

The SSD is working great - nice quiet machine and running super fast. The 16Gb is slightly bigger than the 32Gb (0.3” vs 0.2”) and makes a small bulge on the underside but it still sits flat with the feet still on.

Windows 7 RC on x505

Hi all!

I recently got a second hand x505zp, and after using it in xp for a day, decided to try windows 7. I had read about it beforehand, and gathered a few helpful guides.

The most interesting part is perhaps that I did the install over network from my vista desktop pc. I did so using a combination of these guides:

http://blog.ryantadams.com/2008/02/01/how-to-boot-from-the-network-pxe-boot-with-tftp-and-windows-pe/

http://rickatnight11.com/?p=181

... using an already vLite-treated Windows 7 RC version. There were a few small changes needed in the tftp/pxe boot (I can only remember not using \ in front of username during mapping of cd (I actually used a mounted image))

After install of the original utilities and telling windows where to find the right drivers (I had downloaded them from ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Vaio/ORIGINAL/), everything seems to work.

I have not been able to rate the performance using windows, but in combination with Chrome it is pretty damn fast (even though it uses 271 mb ram at rest). Will come back with some more after I have had time to use it.

EDIT: I had some serious trouble with the display adapter, but now I think it finally works. Windows would reinstall generic (VgaSave) drivers everytime i rebooted, causing sleep to be unavailable (though not much else, just very annoying). The solution seems to be to completly uninstall all display drivers and delete them from the HD (option when you choose to uninstall), don’t reboot when prompted, install preferred drivers (I used DriverMax and this driver: http://justendeal.com/driver/855gm_vista_driver.zip). Just to be safe I pulled out the WLAN card before rebooting (to avoid windows update), and it has worked since.
