Hi all

Fool that I am, I bought a 1gig memory upgrade for my X505, and then read it’s a soldering job…

I fancy a peek inside to see if it’s doable - does anyone know what size tri-wing it takes to open the machine up?

I’m in the UK, and this site seems to have them down to size 0, which I have a suspicion may be what I need:

So, my new toy arrives in a couple of days time, my VGN-X505VP. I am really looking forward to it, however I want to change the HDD for a 40Gb unit, I have my screwdriver on order to take the X505 to bits, and now I just need to get the HDD ordered up.

However I am having difficulty tracking down the required HDD, particularly as I live in the UK. Does anybody know where to find one?

I have a Hitachi 1.8” HDD, but I beleive the Toshiba have the IDE connector on the end of the drive, while Hitachi put it on the side, therefore making my Hitachi incompatible? So I’m now looking for any compatible 40Gb drive, or even a 30Gb.

I hope that title got your attention. There’s an australian seller that has the type of drive for the X505 that fits, in a batch of 10, for 680 usd. If people here could somehow work together, or if a more rich X505 owner could buy the batch and sell them here with a little profit, everyone could benefit.

I already have a 16Gb SSD (also via ebay from australia), so I won’t be joining in the fun =P

I’m a photographer and I use my X505SP as a photo data bank too. My camera Canon 1DMk2 uses CF card, so I bought FireWire CF card reader long time ago. It works perfectly with my desktop PCs and transfer speed is pretty many higher than via USB2.0 port. Unfortunately it isn’t possible to connect that CF reader to the X505 because it needs 6 pin connection - CF reader is an active device and needs power supply for correct work. My previous Z505LSK had both i.Link connections - 4 pin and 6 pin, so I had no problem. In my opinion lack of 6 pin FW is the X505 pretty large fault.
So this is my question. Is on a market the 4 pin FW cable having additional “like DDRW3 supplying twig” on the one side and typical 6 pin FW on the other? Or maybe is possible to get only X505SP i.Link supplying plug? If yes, I’m able to make an adequate connection cable by myself.
Thanks for any help.
